Does Lemon Water Help You Lose Weight?
Hey guys! Many of you have been asking the nutrition question, does lemon water help you lose weight? It’s become pretty common to find lemon water in lists of weight loss tips, as well as in weight loss articles and even pinterest boards, but it’s often unclear what lemon water actually does in support of losing weight. So does lemon water help you lose weight? The simple answer is yes! Let’s dive a little deeper into the reasons you should be drinking lemon water every morning!
First of all, lemon is very detoxifying. When your body is full of toxins, it’s a lot more stubborn about letting go of that extra fat. The lemon helps to flush out those toxins and therefore aides in the flushing of fat, equaling weight loss! You may feel an immediate effect when you drink your lemon water, such as a more effective digestive system (ehem), or a natural energy rush. Bottom line, you’ll be feelin’ good in the morning!
As well as a natural antioxidant, lemon water is a powerful natural diuretic! What does that mean for your waistline? Bye-bye, bloat!! So when you’re feeling puffy, whether you had a bit too much salt the previous day or it’s that time of the month, down a glass of lemon water followed by a glass of plain water, then ditch the oversize sweater and head out feeling slim and confident in your favorite tight tee.
It’s important to have your lemon water in the morning before breakfast, because not only will it get your systems working again after their night off, but it will also help you not overeat at breakfast because the water will fill you up a bit and help trigger satiation in your brain. Also, your brain tends to confuse hunger with thirst, so drinking water first will help differentiate between the two!
There’s a bit of a discretion amongst the different articles and tweets about how you should drink your lemon water. Some people say to drink it warm, others swear it’s more effective chilled, and we’re left holding a room temp glass of lemon water wondering what is life. So let’s break it down!
The benefits of warm lemon water versus chilled!
Honestly, it depends on which benefit you are most interested in. You should drink your lemon water warmed first thing in the morning if your goal is to detoxify and regulate your digestive tract. It can, you know, get things moving better if it is warm.
However, as those of you who are on my Bodybuilding Diet know, starting off the morning with at least 16 ounces of chilled water is vital for revving up your metabolism and firing up your fat-burning furnace for the rest of the day! So if your main focus is to use your lemon water to burn fat and lose weight, I recommend preparing it chilled. I don’t like to have actual ice cubes in it, because I want to drink it quickly and I find iced water is too cold to gulp down in a few seconds. Here’s how I prepare mine, since I always forget to fix it ahead of time and keep it in the fridge!
What you’ll need:
One half lemon
One 16-to-20 ounce glass
A few ice cubes
Fill your glass with filtered water, leaving about an inch of room at the top.
Squeeze in your half of lemon, making sure to get every drop you can.
Drop in a 3 to 5 ice cubes, and stir quickly with a knife or long spoon.
Your ice cubes should disappear as your glass becomes frosty. Once they’re gone, make sure the water is nice and cold, and drink it down! Drink it quickly to flood your systems with detoxifying lemon and metabolism-boosting chilled water. For de-bloating purposes, drink an additional glass of water soon after. Then, enjoy your breakfast and your extra energy.
