Not to mention, all those germs can get into your eyes or mouth and possibly make you sick! The best way to deal with these nasty effects of dirty brushes is simple: just learn how to clean makeup brushes and get to work! This method is easy and effective, and will have your makeup brushes squeaky clean and fluffy in no time at all. :)

How to clean makeup brushes: top two options!

There are two ways to thoroughly clean your makeup brushes. You can use a brush cleanser that comes pre-made, or you can make a simple DIY cleanser with two products that you already probably have in your kitchen!

Option number 1: A pre-made cleanser, like Japonesque Makeup Brush Cleanser.

This is a convenient cleansing method, because the cleanser comes pre-made spray bottle. Simply spritz your brushes with the solution, work in until makeup residue begins to wash out, then rinse! Allow your brushes to dry before use. You can purchase a makeup brush cleanser at makeup stores such as Ulta or Sephora, along with other stores that sell makeup brushes.

Option number 2: DIY olive oil cleanser!

This is my favorite way to clean my brushes, because I feel good about using a natural oil, plus saving money buy using these inexpensive products that I already have at home!

What you will need:

  • 1 TBS extra virgin olive oil.
  • About 1/2 tsp dish soap, like Dawn.
  • A small plate

How to clean makeup brushes with your DIY solution:

  • Pour your oil and soap onto your small plate, combining the two products.
  • Take your first brush, and swirl it into the mixture
  • On a different area of the plate, continue mixing and swirling the brush, until the solution is worked thoroughly throughout the entire brush head, and you see the makeup residue leaking out.
  • Rinse the brush completely

Repeat with every brush in your kit, then allow to dry! The dish soap will cleanse and disinfect the brushes, while the olive oil adds moisture back and keeps your brush hairs from drying out or becoming too brittle. I was a little bit nervous the first time I used this method because I was afraid the olive oil would cause me to break out after using the brushes, but the molecules in olive oil are too large to have the pore-clogging effects that we associate with many other oils.

Whether you end up using the simple pre-made cleansing solution that you can buy at any makeup supplier or drugstore, or you go for the more economically friendly option and try the DIY method, your brushes will be clean, dirt-free, makeup-free, and back to looking and feeling like they are fresh out of the package they came in. Yay, fluffy clean brushes!!

Have fun refreshing your makeup brushes, babes!
