Starbucks Calories

starbucks calories, kandee johnsonOkay, so you’re in line to get your favorite drink at Starbucks and start wondering, “just exactly how many Starbucks calories are we talking about here?” “Am I actually choosing something healthful, or am I just being tricked into thinking it’s good for me?”

Well, for starters, Starbucks is not into “tricking” you into anything. In fact, they pretty much come clean and speak openly about all the different sugars in their drinks. It’s just that you may not realize which ones are loaded with sugar (read, “empty calories”), and which ones aren’t.

Low Calorie Starbucks Drinks

For instance, here’s a little tidbit you might not know: There’s no such thing as a sugar-free frappuccino at Starbucks – even the “light” frappuccinos are made with sugar base. So don’t assume that because your order has the word “light” in the name, that it’s automatically low-calorie. LowER calorie, maybe :)

In fact, if you order something at Starbucks and it tastes sweet, it probably has more sugar than you would think, because of the sweetened base they use in all their sweetened drinks, both hot and cold.

…so let them!

If you’re trying to avoid drinking sugar, or any of those deadly sugar substitutes (none of which is good for you), order your hot espresso drink with steamed milk. Steamed milk tastes sweeter than cold milk, so if you’re going to add milk or half-and-half anyway, get them to steam it & add it for you.

Okay, I think we get the idea – all of these frappuccinos are WAY too heavy with sugar to be anywhere near healthful. In fact, they’re all just bad for you, because they have so much sugar, and therefore empty calories that only make you fat & nothing else. Except maybe temporarily happy…

So, is there any frozen Starbucks deliciousness that IS okay for us to consume at will? Well, the short answer is: not really. You can go with the “light” option, which only means they use skim milk instead of whole. However, in light of many recent studies that have concluded that low-fat food is overall less healthy than it is in its non-processed form (as in skim milk vs. whole milk), the calories you save may not be worth it. Plus, even if you order… let’s say… the Venti Caramel Brûlée Light Frappuccino, you’re still getting 270 fairly empty calories (it has a little protein), and 58 grams of carbs!

The bottom line on most Starbucks frozen drinks is: you’re not going to drink them for health reasons. If you do decide to indulge yourself in a big ole frappuccino, PLEASE make it just once a week as a big treat. Because downing something like this every day is going to quickly add up to some major poundage! Starbucks calories can sneak up on you, and they’ll add up as quickly as any. So pay attention to what you put in your mouth – and live healthy!
