Steak and Shake Menu
The Steak and Shake menu is big – and I mean really big. To be precise, as of this writing, it has nearly 275 different items. And even more than that, if you count blended milkshakes that you design yourself. That’s a lot of Steak ’n Shake!
The important thing to remember as you look over the Steak and Shake menu is that no matter what you order, it’s fast food (whether they cop to it or not), and nothing on the menu is going to be particularly “healthy.” There are some things that are less bad for you, and some things that maybe aren’t even all that terrible, but if you’re looking for health food, let’s face it – you’re not going to end up at Steak ’n Shake, and you should try our banana strawberry smoothie! You’re visiting this place because you like the taste, right? And it does taste good!
Steak and Shake
The original Steak ’n Shake was born in Normal, Illinois, in 1934. It was originally a gas station/chicken restaurant whose number one money-maker was beer! But then prohibition came along, and owner Gus Belt decided he could make up the loss by selling burgers, a market that was pretty wide-open back then. And to prove what quality burgers he was serving, he decided he would wheel out a barrel full of steaks & grind them up into burgers while the customers watched! The customers loved the whole spectacle, and apparently the burgers too; and they still call them “steakburgers” to this day.
Steak n Shake Shakes
The “shake” in the Steak ’n Shake name referred to their hand-dipped milkshakes, and they’re still a staple on the Steak and Shake menu, totaling at 21 different milk shakes on their current menu.
If you’re headed to a Steak ’n Shake, you’re probably not one to worry much about calories and nutritional value and such, but you should. Some items on the Steak and Shake menu are WAY overboard, with more calories than a normal person should eat in a whole day! And which items they are might surprise you!
Steak n Shake Nutrition
So, here’s a little tip: If you’re reasonably interested in keeping your healthy habits intact, but you’re eating at Steak ’n Shake anyway, STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING WITH CHILI IN IT. Most of the chili items are over 1000 calories on their own – that’s before you add fries or any other side. Also, if it has the word “SKILLET” in it, you’re about to throw down a whole day’s worth of food, calorically speaking.
Steak n Shake Menu
If you’ll stick with me long enough here, I’m going to give you a chart that includes every single item on the Steak and Shake menu, but first let me give you our “official recommendations” for what you should order. You are currently reading in the NUTRITION area of this website, so our recommendations are all about the nutrition in the food, not about the taste. Because anyway, most of the stuff on the Steak and Shake menu is going to taste good, because it’s so bad for you!
But here are our Top 5 picks for what you should order from the Steak and Shake menu, non-breakfast & non-dessert, based on nutritional value:
1. Grilled Chicken Salad
I know – boring. But low in calories (270) and relatively low in carbs for this menu (30). Remember though, the dressing is going to add up to 150 more calories. You might consider the Apple Pecan version – looks a little less boring, and still healthy!
2. Single Steakburger
What? A burger made this list? Yep, it’s almost the same calories AS THE SALAD! 280 calories, and 30 carbs. But check this out – buns are often a large part of both, so even if you left off one bun, you could afford to get a double, with cheese, and it’s still comparable to the Grilled Chicken Salad in nutritional value! I don’t know about you, but I’m headed for the burger!
3. Chicken Gumbo or Vegetable Soup
A bowl of this is actually lowest in calories of any on this list, but it’s technically listed as a side order. So it might not be a very big bowl. But hey, at only 140 calories, get 2! Or a side salad to go with it, maybe.
4. Turkey Club Sandwich
Weighing in at 420 calories, it may sound a little high for a sandwich. But you can always leave off one, or even two pieces of bread (club sandwiches usually have 3 slices), which would cut down on calories & carbs both. And that would be great, since it comes in at 45 carbs – kinda high.
5. Steak Franks
In other words, hot dogs! These are generally okay, except for the one with chili; mostly below 500 calories. And theoretically they’re “steak franks,” so maybe that’s healthier than whatever hot dogs are usually made of…? I have a feeling if you eat one steak frank & nothing else though, you’re still going to be hungry. So you’ll order fries, and then you’ll want a shake…
