Our take:

There is nothing that will replace good oral care and professional cleanings and checkups. It really does help to maintain your white smile if you quickly rinse away any coffee, berries, or other staining foods and drinks.

3. Whiten Teeth With Baking Soda

Baking soda is an effective homemade teeth whitener, but it should be used no more often than every other day for two weeks, and then just once a week after that. The reason is that it can be abrasive to your enamel, so be aware and diligent not to damage your teeth. Many people promote mixing it with lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide, but these can damage your enamel and is not recommended by dentists. I would stick to only the baking soda because I want my teeth to last a lifetime!

Our take:

One the most touted ways  we found when trying to to find out how to whiten teeth naturally was the age old baking soda teeth whitening method. While this method did work to remove plaque, making our teeth look somewhat whiter, it took over a week before we really started seeing mild results. *After two weeks, our teeth were maybe a little whiter, but we find this method better for a touch up in between other ways to whiten teeth.

How to naturally whiten teeth with baking soda

  • Make a toothpaste by combining baking soda with a little water.
  • Dip your toothbrush and brush in an up and down motion for two minutes.
  • Rinse
  • Repeat every other day for two weeks

Option 2

  • Make a paste of baking soda and water
  • Apply to your teeth, getting into the pales between your teeth.
  • Let stand for 5 minutes
  • Rinse
  • Repeat every other day for two weeks

4. Rubbing your teeth with strawberries, lemons, or other fruit

Our take:

Though you may see many celebrities touting these methods, studies show that the fruit acids  can break down your enamel, weakening your teeth by 10 percent! *We do not recommend using fruit or other acids to whiten your teeth.

5. Professional teeth whitening

Our take:

If you want to really whiten your teeth and get rid of old, deep stains, then professional teeth whitening is your best bet. You can get significantly whiter teeth at your dentist’s office. We love our long lasting results!

How much is professional teeth whitening?

You will pay between $200 to $400, depending on where you live and what your particular dentist charges. It is worth shopping around a bit for the best price. These prices are for the the home trays and bleaching gel method, which is what we used.

How to have your teeth professionally whitened

  • Make an appointment with your dentist
  • If your dentist finds you are a good candidate for teeth whitening, you will be fitted with a whitening tray. (not painful but it involves a tray of yucky goo being placed over your teeth. You will survive haha!)
  • When your trays are back from the lab, you will be called to pick them up along with the bleaching gel.
  • You will sleep in the trays for two weeks. If your teeth become sensitive, (mine did), simply skip a night or two between treatments.
  • Brush and rinse in the morning. You will love the results!

5. Crest White Strips

Our take:

Honestly guys, these things work as well as the dentist office. It’s the same formulation that  you can pay a lot more for. Buy the professional strength box, and you will be very happy. We have used them once or sometimes twice a year to maintain our very white smiles. Follow the directions exactly, and try not  to swallow the gel. Also, this will only work on natural teeth and should not be used if you have enamel problems or extremely sensitive teeth.

How to apply Crest White Strips

  • Open the packet and peel the top layer.
  • Dry your teeth with a clean cloth for best adhesion.
  • Apply to your top teeth, covering each tooth and folding the excess behind the teeth.
  • With your fingernail gently push the tape to fill the creases between your teeth.
  • Repeat on your lower teeth.
  • Leave on for 30 minutes.
  • Gently brush teeth.
  • After two weeks you won’t believe your sparkly white smile!

Now go out and share that beautiful smile and make someone’s day!

Happy beautiful life!

Suzanne
